The Big One: After a humbling at the Calderon by Real Madrid, it is time for Athletico to visit the Bernabau and face the La Liga leaders. Diego Simeones' men had a rough start to the season but are currently undefeated in their last 6 games ( 5 wins and 1 draw) since losing to Barcelona at the Calderon. A return in form was much needed for Athletico and it has benefited them as they displaced Sevilla off their 3rd position in the league.
For Real Madrid it will a home advantage and they are on a run of 8 games without losing (7 wins, 1 draw) since a shock defeat at Valencia. As the season progressed, Barcelona have caught up with them in the league and are currently just 2 points behind the league leaders( with Madrid having a game in hand). This may be worrying for Zidanes' men but looking at the form they are in, it looks like the La Liga title will finally be going to the Bernabau.
The Madrid derby fixture has grown in stature since a few seasons and it continues to grow as one club is trying to get out of the shadow of its superior nemesis. Athletico are no longer a small club, but they certainly are far behind in terms of trophies when compared to Real Madrid. But, when we look at the current scenario, one thing is sure, Diego Simeone has built something really special at the Calderon and Real Madrid is aware of that. All is good for Athletico as they have already become one of the most dominant forces in Europe. This is very much satisfactory for the Calderon faithful as they have reached 2 champions league finals in last 3 seasons. While this definately may be a positive, losing both of them to Real Madrid hurts and haunts the Roji Blancos. Big Game mentality lacking? Maybe. For Real Madrid, its just about maintaing their superior status which they are doing quite well. Their reputation is intact as 3 champions league win in last 3 years shows how the worlds biggest football club is super big when it comes to big game mentality.
It is anyones' game at the moment as Real Madrids' superior attack meets Athleticos' resilience.
Get set for this entertaining fixture of the two Madrid Giants with Pride, Emotions and Points at stake.
